I am quite tantalizing close to finishing the binding on my blue 18th century stays, only about two inches to go. I've been working on them off and on (as the wrists allow) for a week now and I'm SO ready for them to be done! They do look good though. For once in my life I don't have a deadline to finish them by (having worn them to CosCon sans binding) so I decided to revel in tiny stitches and take my time. Part of me is regretting that decision as I'm totally over working on the project but the other part sees my fine needlework and *squees* inside.

I do have progress pics but have mis-laid the USB cord so I can't get them off my camera. Moo.

So what is on the agenda in the coming months? Sadly I am not going to make it to Costume College this year, *weeps*, so after CosCon I've been feeling a little rudderless in the sea of costuming possibilities. I have lots of half-finished projects laying around that need attention but honestly most of them I don't care a fig about at the moment. Since I don't really have costume deadlines and events until the fall I've decided to work on only what I feel a burning desire to work on this summer. Should be fun really.

Top of the agenda are the Charles II dress, new Regency stays (mine "broke" at CosCon) and finishing the Pimpernel revamp. That list should keep me busy if not completely out of trouble for a little while anyway... :P

Oh yes and my other project this week has been updating my website (as the wrists allow). All the diaries and event albums should be updated now. Man was I behind!

The stays are now wearable, yay!

I like the fit, the third row of horizontal boning does make some difference. It makes my bust more flat and yet more round. Very late 1770s. Someday I will get the binding on (and take better pics for y'all) but for now I'm skipping straight to the fun stuff - the frocks!

Yesterday I laced myself up and tried on the Queen of the Night toile I worked on last fall. I remembered it looking pretty good but stopped work on it until I had new stays (just in case they fit differently). The toile needed some slight tweaks but nothing major. I mostly re-drew the neckline, the "zone" shape and the center front point (having changed my mind about those shapes). A little trimming around the armsycle and that was about it.

Suddenly I was done and like ready to cut out something out. Wow! I'm so glad I put in some work on this a couple of months ago, even without new stays. It's going to make my life so much easier now. I’m now feeling quite lighthearted and optimistic about finishing my CC27 line-up, especially since I can use this pattern as the base for my Pimpernel revamp and the Fort Fred outfit. So three patterns in one. Whoo hoo!

So I spent the rest of my sewing time tracing off the master patterns for the queen of the night. Today I'm going to cut out the fashion fabric this morning and then work on tweaking the pattern for the Pimpernel. Can I get two frocks cut out today? Stay tuned for our next episode... err post. :>

Ahh yes and here are some pics of the construction of the stays which I haven't posted before...

I finially had a chance to try on my stays yesterday (!!) and they are a little snug, which is fine since I'm continuing to lose wieght. Only thing is becasue of the large gap the shoulder straps aren't comfy. So I spent some time trimming them down and re-shaping them a bit.

So annoying. I really just want to work on a frock - enough with the stays already!

Yes, yes, pics soon! :>

My stays are done!

Well not really. I still have all the binding to do, but they are in wearable, toile fitting condition. You know what that means - I can finally actually get to work on my CC27 frocks. Yes! Not more being tortured by your foufy polonaise trimming posts - I can work on mine too!

So I only have a month and 3 frocks to make. I'm not crazy, not at all.

Today I'm being a good girl, labeling and sorting patterns I've been throwing in the bin, working on some commissions due this week and cleaning out my pending bin. Little things like that modern skirt I've had ready to be hemmed for 3 months and the sash I cut out of leftover black striped fabric for random 18th century use, a sweater that needed mending. That sort of thing. Just clearing space for the madness that will be CC27 sewing.

Yesterday was very productive.

I mostly worked on a commission that is due at the end of the month. The dress, formally known as the prettiest toile ever, needed some alternating to fit my client so I spend most of my day on that. Gah, alterations are SO time consuming! I also did another mock-up of the sleeve. The first mock-up looked pretty good at my fitting last week but I needed to add fullness/puff at the top. This toile looks pretty good, it just a little tweaking (more fullness at the back) and I can cut and assemble the real sleeves. Then the project will be done - yay!

I also worked on my stays a little bit. I sewed the two halves of the front lining together and then stitched on the bias tape for the horizontal boning. I noticed on [livejournal.com profile] tailordrews last pair of Dideriot stays he had more than 2 lengths of boning. Then I looked at the pattern. Sure enough, the illustration shows four pieces while only two are marked on the pattern. So I decided to experiment and add another piece to make three. I don't know if it will actually make a difference or not, we'll see.

I then started putting all the pieces together, although I didn't get too far with it. My bed was calling far too loudly! :P

Life is very busy right now. Busy in a good way but still busy. So my sewing has been very piecemeal, an hour here, 20 minutes there - whenever I can squeeze it in. I'm getting stuff done, I'm even taking pics - I'm just not posting. Moo.

So stays progress. My fabric came in and I liked the bright blue linen best out of my choices. So blue it is, with bright yellow binding. Very Technicolor. Hee. Once the fabric was washed and pressed, I laid out the interlining pieces and cut (the blue will be my front and lining).

Next up, the boning. I used this tool from [livejournal.com profile] sadievale's dad's workbench. We aren't sure what it is exactly but it cuts the cable ties like butter - much easier than my old Navy issue scissors! After the pieces were cut I rounded off the edges with sandpaper.

Now if my headache du jour would just go away I could work on them some more...

a reward

I finished off the back boning channels this afternoon. So I'm really at a stand still on the stays until my fabric comes in.

As a reward for being a good girl and working on the stays this week I've been working on some 18th century frosting, otherwise known as hat making. *evil laugh* Oh I'm having way too much fun!! But more on that later... *wink*
jennylafleur: (stays)

Yesterday I sewed all the channels in my front pieces.

I decided to experiment with using temp basting spray rather than the pins and hand basting I've done in the past. It worked like a dream! My coutil pieces didn't shift or move one little bit. Yay! (I was careful to start with the longest center bones and to sew up and down in alternating directions too) I have to say I am loving working with the coutil so far. It really is fabulous stuff for foundation garments! :>

I used silk thread, since Bette, my sewing machine, didn't like the quilting thread I've used in the past. I like the silk thread alot though for this, it's so lovely to work with. *sigh*

I'm finially working on those new stays! Thanks to weight loss and my last pair wearing out, it's time for new stays. I was tempted to try another style/pattern but the thought of no fitting, just some minor tweaking, really appeals. So new Diderot stays it is - call me lazy but there you are!

These stays will be almost identical to my last pair. I will construct them the same way (via The Mara Riley Method of Stay Making), with simular materials (yay cable ties!). I learned my lesson on using silk twill though. I hadn’t even finished the stays before the fabric had pricked. Even though I interlined with sturdy cotton, the fabric has proved too fragile for the wear and tear of the boning as well. Bummer.

I dug deep into The Stash and found a last piece of coutil. You don’t want to know how old it is but it's just enough for my stays - yay! It's a dull unbleached color though so I'll have a pretty fashion fabric on the outside. If one must make stays they must be pretty!

What the outside fabric will look like I have no idea! I've ordered a couple of things from B&R Exports so I'm waiting to see the fabrics in person before I make a finial decision. I want something fun though, almost to the point of obnoxious. :P

Here are the choices:
shocking pink "plain silk"
turquoise blue linen
white linen/silk blend - I'll dye it a shocking color (or at least try)
jennylafleur: (1788)

I just did my very first fabric burn test... ooh, ahh! It confirmed that my suspicions about the fiber content of the pink fabric I bought in NYC was right - it's a wool/rayon. Dude I am good!

So I can't use it for my new stays. Moo. I don't mind making a frock or two out of blends but not stays. I learned that lesson the hard way. So back to square one on the stay fabric. I do have some silk taffeta I could use but I'm concerned about it not holding up well. I tend to stick my stays with lots of pins while I'm toileing patterns, I can't imagine that will work well with taffeta. But I want pretty. Bah!

In happier news [livejournal.com profile] sadievale and I worked on the patterns for stays last night. I had some minor tweaks to make to my pattern (which necessitated re doing some of the boning channels - ick) then we had some more major tweaks to make for the same pattern to work for S (which, thanks to lengthening for her long torso, necessitated more boning channel re-drawing *sigh*).

I left my pattern with her (so her mom could trace it off for herself) so I can't work on stays this week. Darn. I'll just have to go back to my current CADD project of a new Regency dress and Spencer. I’m hating that, can you tell? Not that I know what fabric I'm using for the Spencer. I think my stash and I need some quality time this week to work out these supply issues...

I didn't mean to fall off the face of the LJ world! I knew October would be crazy but really it's been insane. Fun but insane.

Last weekend I was in Myrtle Beach for our annual Mary Kay Fall Retreat. It was great fun and I took some much needed time to get away and get quiet with God. It was cool, the MK speakers throughout the weekend reconfirmed some of the things He'd been speaking to me at the Women's Retreat a few weeks ago. I feel like I have some good preservative on my life now, a direction and purpose that I've been missing lately. I came back feeling very refreshed. Life has since hit but I'm slowly getting caught-up and moving things off my "pending list" which feels great.

Sadly in the midst of the madness, the thing that has totally fallen by the way-side is costuming. So no, you haven't been missing anything because I haven't been working on anything. My projects are so far down the list it's a little discouraging. I have 5 quilt signatures, a "gift" project, then 3 pending commissions, plus 3 half finished modern skirts I desperately need.

When I will have time for my costumes I don't know. I'll just have to make time because it's starting to drive me crazy. First on the list - new 18th century stays. I need to order the supplies though - that is on today's to do list!
