I love how productive and inspiring my friend's list has been lately - such fun!

My weekend was quiet, nursing Mom and taking on "homemaker in residence" duties for the foreseeable future. Dad was a great help of course, we do make a good team.

In between all that (and the couple of migraines that popped up) I beaded the Peacock. I'm really determined to make progress on this project and not be scrambling at the last minute. Embellishment of this nature is no fun under stress. So I channeled all my post-Saucy/Flirty-time inspiration into the Peacock. Nothing like 3 days with costuming buddies to make you want to costume! Watching Downton Abbey helped too of course. :P

I finished the second Peacock panel late last night - yay! So two down, 4 to go. I forgot to log hours on this panel but a rough estimate would be about 35 hours. Based on that I'm estimating the whole bodice will be in the neighborhood of 300 man-hours of pure bodice beading. Plus construction and gown embellishment. I am insane.

Luckily my next costuming event isn't until March (the Williamsburg Costume Symposium which I'm not going to, only crashing the social occasions surrounding it) and I really don't need to make anything for it. I'm tempted to join the redingote crowd that is forming but really I don't know that I'm emotionally ready to re-visit that project. We'll see. It's not like I don't have a closet full of 18t century lovelies I'd love to be photographed in Williamsburg. Hee.

I have Casey's Swing Dress Sew-Along of course, which I really must get myself together on. We are doing muslins this week and I still don't have a fabric or firm plan of what I want to do for that. It will be something from the stash of course so no biggie. I just haven't really thought about it yet. Too many other things going on. :>

So my goal is to get at least one more Peacock panel done before WCS, hopefully more. It will make for rather boring LJ entries I'm afraid. I'll see if I can't come up with other interesting things to post about... :>

I'm happy to report the Victoriana Fete was a great success! I had a wonderful time, the food was fabulous and the company even better. Thanks to Dad volunteering to be our Chef for the day (Chef Blanc-de-Blanc) my simple little Fete morphed into a 6-course luncheon (with wines!). We are insane!

The food went off well, thanks to lots of pre-planning and excel spreadsheets with Dad. And of course the help of my kitchen slaves helpers [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb & [livejournal.com profile] girliegirl32786. They helped me clear plates, pour the wine and serve. We make such a good team. It was a lot of work but it was a lot of fun. I don't expect to do anything like this for a good long while though! Whew!

The Menu:

Each course had it's corosponding beverage too:
hors d'œuvre - Blanc-de-Blanc Champagne
fish - Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio
entree - Shiraz (Penfold's Bin 128)
cheese - Ruby or Tawny Port
dessert - coffee, & more champagne & port

We also had an alternative entree for my vegetarian guests, Wild Mushroom Ragoût in puff pastry. I nibbled off of Aubry's plate and that was tasty too - yay! I'm getting more comfortable with working around everyone's food allergies and diet restrictions, it's challenging but fun! I think my favorite course was the Stilton with local honey, walnuts and port - it really hit the spot! The creamed carrots were an untried recipe from the Titanic cookbook and they turned out to be pretty fabulous too.

I'm happy to say my cake was good too, a huge thing since cakes are my weak point in baking. The marzipan was surprisingly easy to make, the marzipan roses not to much. Apparently I suck at making marzipan roses, Dad ended up making them all for me. Hee.

My outfit came out wonderfully, as did my hair (I watched a lot of Daniel Deronda last week to figure out the hair!) and I felt very much the pretty, pretty princess. I totally need more bustle in my life! For some reason all the pics of just me have the neighbors oddious shed in the background (blah) so I'll need to wear it again and take better pics. Oh darn! :>

After the rest of the party left [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb, [livejournal.com profile] girliegirl32786 and I went outside for more pics and ended up in the woods behind my house for silly pics - it was such a ridiculous thing to do in our frocks but SO fun! After that we stripped down to our frilly Victorian undies and spent the evening drinking the open bottles of champagne, sparkling lemonade and wine - plotting and planning costumes for CosCol. A perfect way to end the evening.

The next day we were off to DC to see the pre-Raphaelite exhibit at the National Gallery (which was wonderful!). [livejournal.com profile] gilded_garb had never been to DC so it was really fun to show you the sights (there's the White House! See an obese squirrel!). Hee. The picnic on a bench on the Mall and the long cold walk back from the Lincoln memorial were bonding experiences we decided.

The weekend ended far too soon and the house is now far too quiet! I am looking forward to catching up on my sleep though - we didn't do much of that!

Dispite delays and canceled flights Aubry and Sara made it to Virginia yesterday. Whew!

We set the table, worked on last minute sewing and listened to Dad (our chef today!) prep food. This morning will be full of the same - more food prep, a little furniture moving and of course getting dressed and having fun. I can't wait!!

Sleevils - we hates them precious!

Other than that the mock-ups are going well. I'm hoping to get the sleeves sorted out soon and to move on to cutting my fabirc before dinner tonight. I have pics but I'll save those for the next post.

Party plans are also progressing nicely too. We are going to do a 6 course luncheon in instead of the useal buffet/fingerfood affair. I would never attempt such a thing on my own (becssue I already have and it is impossible to cook, serve, hostess and be in costume at the same time!) but Dad really wants to be a chef for the day. He is so funny. I was teasing him that he should be called Chef Blanc-de-Blanc.

He really wants to serve the food and pour wine too but I keep trying to tell him one person can't do it and that I have willing helpers. I love having a Dad that thinks this is a fun way to spend his weekend. I'm trying not to feel guilty about taking advantage of it but honestly I don't know if I could talk him out of it at this point if I tried. What a lucky girl I am!

So my guests have no idea what they are walking into. :> Makes me wish more of my local costume friends were foodies!
jennylafleur: (candles)
Another day, another migraine. *sigh* So far I'm not too impressed with 2011.

In the evening the meds had finally taken effect and I was tired of sitting on my butt so I started de-Christmasing. I took all the ornaments, tinsel, beads and lights off the big tree and my feather tree. Dad helped me pack the tree bits in garbage bags and packing the rest away will be tomorrow's project. 'Cause I am NOT having another migraine. So there.

There is something so depressing about taking down the Christmas. In the end I enjoy having less clutter in the house but it's still sad in a way. Especially the Christmas tree lights, I truly enjoy the soft glow of the trees in the evening. Some of the post-Christmas depression is the site of all the bins and boxes again. I hate boxes lining the walls, it unsettles me. I'll be glad when the house is back to normal and things are tidy again.

I'm not ready for Monday. I'm really not. I'm so glad I have lots to look forward to to keep me going. I'm having tea at a friend's house on Sunday. She always does such a nice job and I can wear a costume if I want. We'll see what my mood is on the day...

Then the next weekend is Sara and Aubry's visit. I'm SO beyond excited about that!! I have been researching recipes and decorating schemes for the Victoriana party - I'm tired of the same old things - and found some yummies to experiment with. The cake I really want to make is probably too ambitious, especially since cakes are my weak spot, but it will be awesome if I can pull it off. Also we recently got a few more pieces of my great-mother's china, silver and such. There is a particularly stunning silver vegetable serving dish I'm dying to use - I keep picturing asparagus with hollandaise in it but that isn't a very practical dish to make in costume (which I would have too since hollandaise shouldn't sit). So we'll see, I'll use it for something. I just love excuses like this to use the fancy stuff. :>

Oh yes and I have to make SOMETHING to wear to the party. Remind me again why I picked Victoriana as the theme when I don't really have any Victoriana costumes? Oh yes to do something different and more challenging. So I either have to re-make the Poe bodice or make the bodice for my Black & White bustle outfit or be insane and come up with a completely new outfit between now and then. I was going to go with the Poe, only because I know that is the era Flirty and Saucy are doing but at the moment I'm leaning toward the bustle. I'm more confident I can whip that out between now and then and frankly the hair is much easier. We'll see. If all else fails I can always wear my Erte Dress or my Titanic kimono... Heck I can wear whatever I want; it’s my party after all! :P

I had a good time at [livejournal.com profile] sadievale's annual Pumpkin Tea on Saturday. I didn't take many pics but what I have are here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennylafleur/sets/72157625342054826/

[livejournal.com profile] redthreaded came early and dressed with me then spent the night. It was wonderful to see her again and have a chance to catch up - I hope it's the first of many visits! :>

In other fun Costuming news, there was some serious talk at the tea about an East Coast Costume College or Costuming Retreat weekend. The subject comes up every couple of years but no one has ever been willing to step up to the plate and take it on (including me!). Enter [livejournal.com profile] past_blue and "Dress U"!

The original post is here and Victoria has set up an LJ group to get things started here. Currently up for discussion are location (Philly or Richmond) and date (March or June of 2012). I really hope this actually happens - it's way past due!

I'm enjoying the early morning quiet of an autumn morning right now. I think my body has finally gotten over the change in seasons and daylight savings and I'm back to being a morning person. I've missed this time when the light isn't quite at full strength and the house is still.

Today is [livejournal.com profile] sadievale's annual pumpkin tea. My current and pumpkin seed scones were baked last night with great success and the pumpkin mock Devonshire cream (spiked with pumpkin purée and a pinch of pumpkin spice) is ready to go. I just need to pull out the serving dishes...

I'm super excited because [livejournal.com profile] redthreaded is coming over to dress at my house, go to the tea and spend the night at my house. i haven't seen her since CosCol 06 so I can't wait to hang out with her again! I'm also excited to see all the new faces that have recently moved to the area - this is the first costuming event since the great migration.

I should dash, I was a very good girl and ironed my frock last night but I still have hair and make-up to do and serving dishes to dig out... oh yeah and get dressed.
jennylafleur: (naughty)

So yeah, sorry for the radio silence here on the Jennylafleur channel. This past Saturday was the baby shower for a dear friend. Luckily I was co-hosting it since it turned out to be a huge affair. We ended up with over 50 guests - and this was not her only shower! I kept joking that weddings are smaller than this shower. Still it was a blessing to be involved in something that held so much love - it really was a special event for a very special lady.

After months of planning (we started planning the day we found out she was expecting!) the day went off without a major hitch. The decorations came together better than I'd hoped (they were my baby), the food was super yummy (a group effort that), we were right on schedule (no mean feat with that many gifts to open!) and clean-up was a breeze. I still came home feeling like I'd been hit by a truck but it was totally worth it!

Pictures from the shower are on Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennylafleur/sets/72157625245954898/

I've been feeling under the weather since, I've got a bit of a cold now, no real surprise after pushing so hard last week. So I'm taking a few mental health days. Yesterday I basically didn't move all day, today I'm hoping to get some peacock beading done at least. We'll see. We had a storm front move in last night and I have a corresponding headache. I don't want to work on something just to have to rip it out later, ya know?
