not a good mail day

Well nuts! The silk taffeta from fabrics.com is not what I wanted. It's more of a dupioni than a taffeta, without the sheen, the body and with too many slubs. So I'm sending it back. Hopefully that will be a painless process.

Moo I say - MOO! Now I'm super jealous of all the garment district shopping. Life is so unfair.

Oh no! I haven't gotten mine yet - so disappointing!

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, bummer right?

[identity profile] demode.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Was there a particular color you wanted? B/c I have Valentine's (the $6/yd place) card, and [livejournal.com profile] akasha_zuul grabbed their swatch card...

[identity profile] demode.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Pff - obviously I can't code.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, I still love you. :>

Ooooh thanks! I need to figure out what I want to do now. With the possibility of more choices I'm starting to question what I want... the disappointing fabric (and original plan) was black but now I'm thinking about chocolate brown. I need to ponder...

Very annoying!

Fabric.com is easy to return to though. My green wool that totally didn't work out was very easy to send back.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I am most seriously displeased!

Oh good to know! I was hoping it would be simple, one of the reasons I even ordered from them...

Boo :( How frustrating.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods head in agreement*

When do you need your fabric??? If you send me a swatch of the color you want, I might be able to find something for you in said garment district; it's practically my back yard. BUT, you'd have to wait until I'm recovered from baby #2. That means no garment district trips until about November or so. But I'd be happy to be your shopper =)

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh... I may have to take you up on your offer! I'd like to get started before Novemeber but I don't have to. I'm going to try and see if I can find it before then but if not I'll let you know! Thanks!

[identity profile] bauhausfrau.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Rats, how frustrating! What color was yours? I got some in black and while it's not a taffeta it's not a dupioni either, more of a shantung.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
It was black, I'll bet it's the same stuff. You are right, isn't not really a dupioni, shantung would make sense... I've never seen shantung in person. What are you going to do with yours?

[identity profile] bauhausfrau.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Shantung usually has a hand like taffeta but has minor slubs, not the big ones you see in Dupioni. And according to Sally Queen it IS a period fabric! "Pongee" is what they called shantung in the Victorian era. If I remember rightly from Sally's book it was used for dresses after 1830. So I'm actually going to use it for my Poe Mourning dress and maybe as contrast trim, petticoats or ruffles on Victorian stuff.

[identity profile] bauhausfrau.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to add that I figured the slubs won't be very obvious on ruffles.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to know - thanks! Now that I think about it the checked silk Brunswick I saw in the milliner’s shop in Williamsburg must have been a shuntang. With the busy pattern the slubs kinda disappeared but I was a little surprised to see slubs at all there.

I was going to use it for a new Poe Dress too (and an 18th century jacket), so it's probably just as well that I don't want to use it now! Matching fabric - horrors! *giggle* For the Poe I think I'm going to go back to my original idea of cotton. For the jacket... I really want that crispy, shiny, smooth look of true silk taffeta. What a snob I am becoming in my old age! :>

[identity profile] girliegirl32786.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Saddness! :(

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-09 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally.

[identity profile] renzys-frenzy.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Omigod! You totally freaked me out when I read this as I too ordered their black silk taffeta. When I got home from Vegas I had a mini-stroke and tore open the box only to find...black silk taffeta. Mine has no slubs, has a nice sheen and everything else. Go fig.

I wonder if they weren't paying attention and sent you dupioni by accident. Either way if you aren't happy with it - send it back! Take if from a person who has "lived" with a purchase, you won't be happy if you keep it. But Fabric.com has always been real nice to me about those things, so you should have no probs.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm happy for you but seriously that sucks! I'm feeling like the only one who didn't actually get taffeta. I'm glad I can send it back at least...

[identity profile] renzys-frenzy.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that does suck. I am very sorry. Makes me a sad panda cause if anyone needs good fabric, it would be you because you make some of the most gorgeous stuff.

[identity profile] muddled-musings.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
I hate when stuff like that happens!!! :( Sending lots of fabric sympathy your way...

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why we like to by our fabric in person... :P
