So for some reason the stars have finially aligned for me to make a Belle costume... along with a good chunk of the costuming world it seems! Already 2012 is shaping up to be the year of Titanic frocks & Disney Princesses. It’s funny how every so often these things happen spontaneously - have we all been drinking the same water or what?!

I think it's awesome that other costumers are making Disney Princesses to wear at various events in 2012. (I'll be at Dress U (maybe the tea?) & Costume College (Ice Cream Social I think)). The more the merrier I say - I love it when costumers make the same thing because, in fact, it's never the same. Even with the same inspiration (an illustration, an extent gown, a fashion plate) we always end up putting our own personalities in our work (that combination of talent, taste, skill, fabric finding-fu and budget will always make your costume scream "you"). I think it's great fun to see the variation and different twists on the same theme.

Sadly there is already some walking on egg-shells going on with the various groups that are forming. Having to fear the potential of people being petty and proprietary (the "it was my idea to copy that first!" syndrome) is a such a shame. No drama has actually erupted, just the fear of it, and I hope it stays that way. Seriously people, the costuming/cosplay world is plenty big enough for all of us to be Disney Princesses in 2012 if we want to.

In that spirit bauhausfrau has created a community dpcostume for us the share and cheer each other on - come join the fun! What Disney or Fairytale Princess costume have you always wanted to make?

*Squee* I am excited to see everyone's outfits as they make them. This coco their was a woman at Sunday undies as Ariel and it was amazing!

I know she's not technically a Disney princess, but I love Meg from Hercules. I had a doll of her as a kid and have always loved her purple toga.

Yay! I just finished my first (I can't believe it took me this long) Ariel costume last night (aside from a few more tweaks that is).

As far as the groups go I usually feel weird when it's friends that decide to do the same costume but other than that it's fair game. Unless you create an original character or version of the character (Lady Joker) I don't think people have the right to complain. :p

Yeah there are times when it's appropriate to be upset when someone "steals" your own design. I would not be happy about a direct knock off of say my Queen of the Night costume but another take on the concept of Queen of the Night - bring it on! To claim "dibbs" on something you can't in anyway claim the copyright on (like a Disney Princess in any of their variations) is just silly. As you say - recreations and reproductions are really fair game.

I've been wondering what to do for the mad tea party for Dress U. A disney princess gown would be very cool... but I wouldn't want to step on toes. I know what you mean about how the drama can sometimes unfold. I'll have to think about it. :)

But, for what it's worth, I think you will be a lovely Belle.

This is great! I've also started making my own Belle gown this month for a Halloween costume. Two other friends and I are making the Disney versions "as they should have been". In other words, the Disney versions with more movement since we'll be wearing them dancing. We have an Aurora, Cinderella, and Belle (which is convenient since most Disney schwag features those three).

I have been desperately wanting to do a historical Snow white for years (shock shock), and I have the perfect thing to wear it for next month. Just no time to do it! Hopefully another reason will come along soon. As a bit of a Disney fanatic I am very excited to see how this trend goes! (and your Belle gown!)

Disney Princess fever, it's going around! For the past few months I'd been planning to make Jane's bustle dress from Tarzan, and then someone in my local costumer's society mentioned they were doing an historically accurate Disney heroine group next year, and now it seems everyone else around the whole country is now. That's so cool! I can't wait to see everyone's dresses, the more the merrier! (Yay Belle! She's my favorite, when I get the courage to use my gold silk I'm totally doing her dress too!) I wish I could afford to go to Costume College to see more Disney dresses in person. Good luck and happy sewing to all! :)
