clean taffeta, dyed faille & eyelet

Still sick - bah! I seem to be getting worse not better. I actually lost my voice! Today I was feeling a bit better toward evening so that is something.

I did manage to do some desperately needed laundry done so that is good. I also washed the leftover bit of bronze taffeta (bits for the ruffle and trim of new ball gown petticoat) that the cat pee-ed on last week. I washed it by hand in the sink - hopefully it didn't loose too much of the crispy taffeta-ness. Worthless cat! Once I'm done here I'll go press it and see how it is. You never know with taffeta, I've had very bad things happen washing acetate taffetas. This one was a poly/nylon so I don't know. *crossing fingers* I could always starch it I guess.

I'd like to work on the petticoat tonight but I'm a bit wiped. I just finished dyeing the ivory faille (by hand). Dude I miss my old washer! *pouts* The faille is in the washer now being rinsed in cold water and vinegar. I'm curious to see what the color it ends up being. I wanted it to match a certain necklace you know...

In bustle news, [livejournal.com profile] laurenmonkey was kind enough to pick up this eyelet lace for my bustle in the LA fabric district. It was a bit of a treat but I figured I'd only ever make the one bustle so I might as well do it right and I'll save days hemming those ruffles. Besides it's so purr-dy! :>

According to the pattern I need 16.5 yds of 6" ruffles (unhemmed) and I'm getting 15yds of 10" lace. Even adding a extra layer for height (which I suspect I'll have to do) I think that will work. I'm all about fudging! :>

I've had decent luck dying in the bathtub (wow, does that ever sound strange!) by using tap water as hot as it will go, which is darn near boiling. I put the dye into a large plastic tub, fill that with the hot water and then the rest of the area in the tub with hot water, alternately letting that water out and refilling with fresh hot water. Works better than on the stove. That's a pain when you have an oven over the stovetop. The hot water was never attached to my washer. *sigh*

Ahh - the things we do for this hobby!! :>

Yes, it can be pure sewicide.

*snort* Oh that was "sew" bad! *heehee*

I hope you feel better soon. And what pretty eyelet!

Thanks - I hope so too! Yes indeed, I love my LJ friends. *hugs computer*

GAH!!

I feel like I'm in some sort of evil cage!! I can't see any of the pix you post while I'm at work and I usually catch up on LJ at work.

*headdesk* this torture should help me become patient, that's the only good that could come of this.

ACK!!

Anyway--Plan's for the Vicki look very interesting (I saw those at home), I can't wait to see it! And lace sounds lovely--(warning: sarcasm ;P)all I needed was you to raise the bar to get me thinking of prettier underwear--pft!(/end sarcasm)

hope you feel better soon *hugs*

*evil laugh* My evil plans are working - pretty underwear will rule the world!!!

*ahem* Did you hear something?... :>

Sorry about the pic issue - bummer! Dad can't read our site at work either, he says it's classified as entertainment and gets blocked by the filters. Both he and I agree it's not entertainment, it's education. Silly filters!

I have to admit I'm doing lace not so much for the pretty but for the no hemming thing. Hems are so evil! Otherwise you better believe I'd be making a red or orange bustle! Stripes would have been fun too. Darn my laziness! :>

I do think I need a striped corset though don't you think? G Streets is having a sale, I should toddle up there one of these days. When I'm feeling human again that is.

STRIPES!! YES!

We were having this discussion last night about the hunt for the perfect black and white striped fabric and one of the people didn't see the appeal--can she see???

Yes, a striped corset would be magical--but remember that thing you told me about the 1st one being a working mock-up. I totally agree with you now, and might either make one out of mundane fabric first OR buy enough fabric in case you need to make it again.

Good luck---Can't wait to see it all!

Not seeing the appeal of b&w stripes?! That is so wrong! *hee hee*

Yeah, I have to admit I was eagerly looking at stripes silk taffetas when that thought occurred and I thought "Jenny - what are you doing". No, I was thinking a nice cotton stripe or something...

That eyelet is gorgeous! Much better than sewing all those ruffles ~ wish I'd thought of that! :)

Hope you're feeling better!

Bummer not feeling good. I hate it when I'm sick and don't feel good, cuz I still want to do stuff.
My bustle petticoat just has that plain ole eyelet. I bought it ready made from TV. It almost makes me want to make it prettier. Good for [livejournal.com profile] laurenmonkey for finding that pretty stuff for you.
