a shortcut

I'm thinking about getting a Frederick's of Hollywood corset, to save CC costuming time. There is one in my size on e-bay right now. My last Victorian corset was an E-bay buy but I don't know! What do you think? Should I just buckle down and make the LM despite time restraints or try this shortcut?

My mom has one that she wore with her civil war gown, and they work, certainly, though it might be a little blasphemous to say so ;) The only thing I've noticed is that the amount of boning gets a little skimpy as the sizes go up (ie: a size 12 has about the same amount of boning as a 2 or whatever).

I wouldn't pay too much for one but if its between having a nice corset or having a nice dress, I'd say as long as you're comfortable and get the right silhouette, the dress wins.

I agree, to lessen the stress level, go with it, but realize that it's not meant to last a long time. It has less boning, and uses the plastic stuff. We promise we won't ask you to take off your dress and show us.
Hey, I even used duct tape one time. :)~

I have a few of them though not for costume wear(*cough*). However, some are made very comfortably and I wore one under my wedding gown all day without discomfort. They are a bit skimpy on bones as previous commenters have stated. I say go for it... it will be a nice backup for the future if you do decide you have time to make a new one. Keep us posted!

I noticed that the other day. I was reading one of Bjarne's entries and as I read down the comments I saw your comment. At first I thought, did I already comment on this... then realized we had the same pic. This one is my default and I almost never change it on comments as I only have a few. I really need to find some cool ones. :)

For general posts I use it. For dress specific posts I ususaly have a themed icon.

I know someone who wears hers from Frederick's under her Victorian stuff with great sucess. You might even grab a few extra bones and reinforce it yourself. It will still take less time than making one from scratch. AND you can reuse that boning when you've got time to make your "real" one.

I use a VS that I have double boned with real boning to supplement the fakey plasty stuff they use. It isn't tough enough for my requirements for a victorian gown, but I used it to great success for my teens gown.

If you use the FOH corset, make sure you swap the plastic boning out for steels. The plastics bend in a sharp and nasty way when laced down at all, especially on those of us with curves. I still have scars from mine. But it should work fine.
