snarking & sniffing :>

I had an absolutely lovely day with [livejournal.com profile] joysdaughter, her DH and [livejournal.com profile] blackswan13 yesterday. We talked, shopped, giggled, ate, talked more and ate more – all while touring Colonial Williamsburg. It was wonderful! Oh and we had the most unbelievably perfect weather. Moderate temperature, low humidity and a cool breeze. It was hard to believe we were indeed in Virginia in late June!

It was great visiting with Suzi (for longer this time too!) and getting to meet Ann and Keith. They were all such fun. It was also great being a tourist in Williamsburg and visiting some of the shops and buildings we hadn’t visited in a while. We got the best tour of the Palace I’ve ever had, hands down. Wish they were all like that. The guide was very entertaining and full of interesting info. No bad first person interpreting - but that is another soapbox. I love that no matter how many times I visit the shops and buildings in CW I always manage to learn something new. :>

We talked “shop” of course and Suzi gave me some ideas for my Bee dress issues and lots of inspiration (per usual). I’m all ready to tackle that costume again after hearing about her adventures in Virginia collections. :> Actually my voice is a little hoarse today after all that talking & giggling!

We got the Milliners shop to ourselves for a few minutes and so got a chance to pet, examine and photograph some fun items. The lady pulled out three fashion dolls for me to look at which was great. They were all 24” tall and made of wood. Gorgeous and way out of my price range, if I could find them I’m sure. Oh well. Getting to handle them and get a feel for the proportions will be very helpful when I make my own this summer. Definitely convinced me to take back that one I bought last month. They had “my” doll dressed up as well and she looked so lame (and difficult to make the clothing) compared to the full sized ones. After CC I really need to get to work on my doll…

I also got to look at a pretty Brunswick jacket. I’m becoming fascinated with Brunswicks. This will sound terrible but what got me started was seeing one at an event and thinking “I could do that better!”. :P So bad! This one was of gingham silk in navy blue. So cute! You know I saw some light blue gingham silk taffeta at G Streets this spring and wondered if I could use it for reenacting – now I know what to make if I ever see it again! :>

Yes and some more random pics from the milliners. Hey [livejournal.com profile] elizabethdress - I think I may have found inspiration for that yellow silk thread in that pocket! :> I’m feeling the need for a stomacher-ed dress too…

Oh I found my find of the month yesterday morning. I was in Hancocks and found a lovely blue and white cotton print that screamed to come home with me. I’m no expert on period prints but this one looks pretty good to me. Only thing is I’m not sure the shades of blue are right. I’ll ask opinions tomorrow at the RCHS event – darn should have brought it and asked Suzi yesterday. *duh* What do you guys think? If not I could alway make a duvet for my newly painted bedroom and maybe a sundress for everyday wear. I bought loads of the stuff thinking sacque with maching petticoat. Oh yes, the best part – it was on sale for $1.37 a yd. *does the happy dance*

It’s been a while since I found a juicy bargain like that… I was beginning to think I’d lost my touch. *wink*

Good luck! :>

Man! You're tempting me to go shopping this week and you know I need to be saving all my pennies!!! ;) *sigh* That is a gorgeous piece of fabric too--what a find!! As for period accuracy: I think its close (like you said), although something just feels "off" when I looked at it. Maybe its just the colors... :\ (I know I'm not much help; its 12am and I spent the entire day sewing!!!)

Anyway, glad to hear you had a good time in Williamsburg--wish I could have been there! ;)

Thanks! This was a total accident, I was there for something needed for the Bee and just happened to see it. :P

Ump, so I'm not the only one that thought that. *mreh* Well, we'll see what RCHS says. I am trying to costume on a budget after all. *hee hee*

I am glad you had a nice time there yet again. That is a place on my list of places to see. The only "real" living history museums that I have been to similar Williamsburg was back in NY called the Genesee Country Museum http://www.gcv.org/. I went there when I was in third grade and it was a lot of fun, but many kinds from my class ruined it for me because either they were not interested in it or they were goofing off. There are some other living history museums in TN between Chattanooga and Nashville that I would like to check out sometime as well.

Yeah, I love living history places like that. It's been great to be within driving distance of CW for so long. :>

Glad you had a great time! The fabric is wonderful...looks fine to me, and the price is excellent. You know, I was looking at Bjornes site and see he uses... what I think is that same silk thread, different color though.

[identity profile] jennylafleur.livejournal.com 2006-07-03 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Yeah, he uses a lot of silk thread - always looks so nice! I think the stuff I have is a little different though, with its varying thickness. Should look great though. *crossing fingers* :>

Hi,
Oh thanks for posting those wonderfull pictures from Williamsburg. I think i would have gone totally BASERK if it was me going there. That hoop you have a photo of with the checked pattern, looks very nice, is it for a doll or is it a real size?
That is a cut i have never seen before?
Bjarne

You really should come over to see Williamsburg for yourself one of these days, you'd love it! :> The hoop was full size. It was hanging in the shop so one could see the inside, which I thought was cool. Of course that means it's the only angle I have of it... :<
